MIREILLE GROS


Swiss artist, born in 1954 in Aarau, Switzerland, lives and works between Paris and Basel.
 
Mireille Gros is a protean artist, mastering drawing, painting, engraving, video, photography and the artist's book. She graduated from the Basel School of Fine Arts (Schule für Gestaltung) in 1980 and then studied for two years at the Cooper Union in New York. Her work is strongly influenced by environmental issues, resulting from several trips to Africa, to the Ivory Coast in 1993, to Mali during a residency grant (iaab, international program of exchanges and workshops, 2002), but also later on in an artist residency in China (iaab, 2008). Her work is a commitment to artistically enrich the biodiversity of planet earth. Since his first public presentation in 1978 at the Kunsthaus Aarau, group and solo exhibitions have followed, including "Selections 22" at the Drawing Center in New York in 1983, "Projekt Schweiz II. Nature - Culture" at the Kunsthalle Basel in 1994, followed by his first major solo exhibition "Emergence" at the Kunstmuseum Bern and the Musée Jenisch in Vevey, 2001-2002, "The Use of the Useless" at the Kunsthaus Basel-Landschaft in 2010, "Opening the Archive" at the Federal Collection of Prints and Drawings of the Zurich University of Technology in 2014, "Intimate Archives" at the Basel Museum of Fine Arts in 2021 and "Dschungelergänzungen" at the Franz Gertsch Museum in Burgdorf and "Vielfalt der ARTen" at the Kunsthaus Zofingen in Switzerland. Her work is part of public and private collections, at the Fonds municipal d'art contemporain de la ville de Paris, at the FRAC Alsace, at the fine arts museums of Basel, Bern and Aarau, at the Helvetia art collection, and at the Swiss National Bank. In 2009, the Musée du Louvre commissioned her to create an engraving (Celles qui disparaissent-celles qui se créent) for the "Chalcographie du Louvre" collection.
