Urban art, whether it is celebrated or decried, is today considered as an Art in its own right. Present in galleries, museums, auctions it is now unavoidable and promised to a certain future. The aesthetics, the provocation, the poetry, the political message, everything is there. This artistic movement which takes forms as diverse and varied as sculpture, stencil, graffiti, poster, mosaic, installation or painting is distinguished by an unprecedented strength of approach: it communicates with the general public on socially relevant themes while maintaining a certain aestheticism. Sometimes echoing childhood and fun like the works of Invader or Kaws, sometimes soliciting reflection on the socio-political context like the works of Shepard Fairey (poster campaign in support of the presidential election of Barack Obama) or Banksy, urban art encourages reaction if not reflection.
It also opens a new era for the world of the Art. Entering a museum or a gallery is no longer necessary to have access to the culture: it is enough now to walk in the street. The users of the public space, confronted with these works are led to retain these visual signatures and to question themselves.
Urban Art is therefore no longer ephemeral but is gradually marking the History of Art.
